So i have this blogger account I've been using for the past year or so... not only that but I have multiple blog accounts, not the least of which is a myspace blog devoted to more personal stuff, but also 2 blogger accounts, a twitter, a last.fm, a blip and an old livejournal. I even have a goddamn yelp. I stopped posting to some and started posting to others, so everything is scattered everywhere and i wonder if there is a point to pulling stuff over to tumblr. hmmmm. should i do it?

I have to thank my awesome boyfriend for showing me this site. Most times I think he keeps things to himself so I'm always happy when he shares. So what is it? It's a media bookmarking site where people drop images into a large pool. It's focus is in but not limited to the fields of design, typography, art, photography. The people who add to it are folks who get an invite so the collection doesn't get overrun by the mediocre. Not only that but it has an engine that can organize by tags. Me likey.

For the past couple of years I've been suggesting to anyone who asks me if they wanted to set up a website what should they do. And for every inquiry I've recommended blog sites as an easy and cheap alternative. Well since I've been looking into updating my personal website myself, I've been doing extensive research and have stumbled on to a CMS and publishing platform that seems to blow the free bloggers out of the water!

The site is called squarespace. An all in one inclusive site that is reasonable priced and has all the tools you need at your fingertips. Even non geeks with no coding background can set a website easily with this online web application/solution. It's super customizable and cuts developing time down to a minimum so that designers can focus more on design and not on the techy stuff or waste money with hiring a programmer. Seems like technology is getting easier and easier these days with the end user in mind. That being said I wanted to share my discovery with others in order to make this world a better place. Generally I don't like to advertise for companies or products but because I find the services this website offers so amazing I thought I would just put it out there for everyone to share.

When I was a kid I would spend hours playing with my lego sets, mostly building houses and what not. One of my dreams then was when I grew up i would buy every lego set ever made and assemble them and display in a room dedicated to my collection. Well I've since lived out 16 years of my adult life and still no lego collection room. But soon I may start! They're planning to come out with an Architecture series that will feature 6 iconic buildings including a Frank Lloyd Wright version. AWESOME!

New Inspiration

It's been at least a year and a half since I earnestly sought design inspiration or actively kept up with design trends that lately I've been down on myself for having let myself fall out of the loop. But recently I've found a couple links that has spurred my excitement and I feel are worthy of posting. My boyfriend purports he sent me one of the links a few months ago but I seriously have no recollection of it. Bad girlfriend am I.

This agency has latched onto some good things and I'm looking forward to seeing more of their artists in future. A few of the artists with this agency work with some lesser known but awesome musicians. I recognize La Boca who's done album covers for the DC recordings crew. Quite a few have these artists have cycled through my itunes playlist. I've always believed good album covers leads to good music, mostly because I've noticed any artists worth their salt tend to collaborate with other inspiring artists.

This site is great for classic design inspiration from the 50s thru the 70s. It's a blog site that continually updates their articles. I stumbled onto them while looking for 70s book cover inspiration. Totally worth looking thru.

Been posting mostly videos lately so figured that maybe I can change things up a bit and maybe inject a little personality this time round. Well whatever little I have to inject. A friend sent over a link to a youtube hindi cover of common ppl that led me to the original version sung by jarvis cocker and i must say i'm kicking myself in the arse for missing that boat the 1st time it came around in the mid nineties. Must have been after the tailend of my britpop phase. He is one sexy muther! MREOW! Sigh, shallow as it may sound makes me glad to have my own little brit boy to contend with. Yum.

I can't help thinking about how pointless twitter is after seeing this on current tv. Each time I tweet I really do have the guilty thought of who the eff cares? :P

Also check out this other brilliant video from current.tv. I love these guys. According to their website the age bracket for their target audience is the 18-34 year old crowd. So what does that say to me? Does it mean once I celebrate my bday in september I must move on to something meant for older folks? And what would that be? Vh1? Network television? Oprah? It doesn't help that I've been recently contacted by old high school acquaintances who all are married and have children now. shit. maybe i'm overdue for a bun in the oven.

I just stumbled onto this website that makes me kinda moist like warm gooey chocolate cake. i love this concept! it's a website that let's you mix and match any image from the net together in it's own drop and drag editor that lets you share with your friends. The interface is Flickrlike and currently it's mostly fashion sets but why let it stop there? I'm thinking interiors! art collages!! themes!!! collectibles!!!! the possibilities seem endless!!!!! Yet another time waster to add to my ever expanding list. Cool!

It's always weird how something totally random can pierce your consciousness and without warning transport you to a place that could have easily been lost to that blackhole of memories. In this particular instance it's a Jackson 5 song that came on to internet radio and reminded me of a simpler time when the biggest reason for my sisters and I to force ourselves up early was to get every second of saturday morning cartoons in. They loved the Jackson 5 while I remember hating that show. I'd be rudely awakened by the theme song blaring in our downstairs living/rec room with the dark wood-paneled walls and the carpet I can't for the life of me seem to recall anymore. Hearing this song by the Jackson 5 makes me sad how I couldn't appreciate them or my sisters more back then.

[Drawing from the urban environment, Heavyweight developed a mix-blend of styles & skills accumulated from a free association of intuitive interests - peripheral influences included rare groove album covers, Japanese hyper-pop styles, dub soundscapes, graffiti burns, skate graphics and turntable culture. Heavyweight tapped into a growing artistic community, extending its creative network to include producers, DJs, musicians, filmmakers as well as other artists and designers. What surfaced was a Heavyweight version, street-style campaign of underground parties, music & art shows, posters, flyers and stickers all housed and produced under one roof - forming the main elements of Heavyweight's creative foundation in art and design.]

Hey guys, no time for a serious write up but I wanted to post pictures from the last Upperplayground Fifty24Gallery opening featuring a 10 year retrospective from the guys who collaborate as the art and design collective HVW8. Funnily enough, I was introduced to them completely random the night before through a mutual friend under different pretenses and got the unexpected treat of hanging with these guys on the real before familiarizing myself with their work. I swear, it never ceases to amaze me how small this city can be. Anyways, a little about these guys: Heavyweight Production House originally started in Montreal, Canada in 1998 by Tyler Gibney and Gene Pendon and is currently based in LA with it’s own HVW8 gallery. Their main body of work called the Heavyweight Art Installation is a collection of large 6’x6’ painted canvases which were created live alongside performances by renowned DJs and musicians including Jazzanova, Afrika Bambaataa, Gilles Peterson, Bugz In The Attic, the Herbaliser, Roots Manuva, Osunlade and Jurassic 5 -just to name a few. With the collaborative efforts of Tyler Gibney, Gene Starship and DSTRBO (Dan Buller), the installation itself has toured internationally including cities in North America, Europe and Japan. Last Thursday was the opening for the Adobe Backroom Gallery show for Ajit Chauhan with Tara Foley. Last Thursday was also the day John and I agreed to have me come in to help with Fecal Face stuff. I think I was just about to leave for the office when I got a text asking me to instead check out an art show taking place at Adobe and could I please pen some words for it. Being the hardworking, eternally loyal, dutiful and might I add AWESOME intern that I am, I said no problem and headed there thinking it would be a quick and easy in-and-out (I always think that). Now I’m not sure if this is something I should admit to but obviously I had no idea there was an opening nor had I ever heard of this Ajit (pronounced Ah-jeet) guy. When I got to the bookstore I was thrown off, having never had the opportunity to check out the gallery before nor for the life of me being able to figure out whether I was in the right place or not. I made my way around the bookstore, weaving in and out amongst the shelves, scratching my head, trying to ascertain how this art show was actually going down. Now if you’ve ever been there you’d know that this place can irrefutably qualify as a quintessential bookworm’s wet dream with the narrowly spaced bookshelves lining the wall from floor to almost ceiling, the overflowing abundance of well worn books, the mismatched furniture, the threadbare rugs, the homemade cardboard signs, the smattering of garden variety houseplants, the tight and typical cozy corners to pop a squat in...all things lending this place its dusty, old school, attic-like charm but also with no real wall space to grace any art on.

I was there for 15 minutes before I said "to hell with it" and finally asked the old beatnik looking dude with the headphones manning the front desk whether I was in the right place or not. Turned out that the show opened at 7 and that it was in the back room. Wish I had known beforehand that the gallery name had the word B-A-C-K-R-O-O-M in it. So fortunately or unfortunately, depending on how you look at it, I failed to make it to the actual party to capitalize on the free wine and cheese we all know are the only things art shows are good for, but rather caught Ajit putting on the final touches in preparation for that night’s anticipated event. Just as well though, because the back room was teensy weensy which I imagine would have undoubtedly been overstuffed with rainsoaked peeps had I shown up next to these art loving joes. Not only that, but the plexiglass covered floor serving as extra wall space would have definitely been obscured by dozens of smelly feet due to the no shoes policy of the room. Conclusion? These factors combined probably would have more than likely prevented me from proper documentation AND I wouldn’t have had the chance to chat with the artist nor sign my name on to one of Tara’s books, so I guess it all worked out for the best in the end. Ah, the advantages of being a clueless dimwit.

I don’t know much about Ajit but from what I was able to gather he’s sort of not from one particular place but from all over even though I do think I recall him saying he does hold a special place in his heart for the bay area. His last and most recent showing was at The LAB here in the Mission. His art is comprised of intricately detailed quilled ink drawings that he illustrates on found vintage paper, some of which he got in India while visiting his grandfather's placed. What’s really great about these drawings are the exquisite and meticulous details that invite the viewer to step in and take a closer look. I tried getting detailed shots of some of the pieces but with the lack of flash and all, you can tell that this is something better appreciated in person. At first thinking this was a solo show, I wondered about this Tara person he kept referring to that did the hair. Finally, I figured it out that Tara Foley is the artist credited with doing the mini-book installation portion of it as well. An appropriate choice since they both complemented each others work well. A few of the pieces I really liked plays with letterforms appealing to the graphic designer in me and when asked if there was anything in particular that inspired his work he said not really, that he just flowed in a sort of automatic stream of consciousness mode and that he also tends to find himself repeating certain patterns. Anyways, I'd be more than happy to go on more about these things because it always all very interesting to get the artists perspective on their own stuff but since this post is starting to resemble a novel I think I'll just get on with the show. Hey Hey, just got back from documenting Ben Tour prepping for his upcoming show this week. Who the heck is Ben Tour you ask? Well, Fecal Face did an interview with this fine fellow sometime last year that you can check out here. Ben’s show opens Thursday, January 10th at Upper Playgrounds’s Fifty24 Gallery in Lower Haight. I had the pleasure of meeting him and shooting the shit for about an hour before having to head back to the neighborhood café to concentrate on my boring humdrum work.

So after missing Ben on my first attempt, I figured I’d go to the cafe and hit him up in a few hours after I was done. Ten minutes after getting settled to the closest and only available outlet, Kimberly, the gallery curator, called me to let me know that he was back. Fearing I would miss him, I packed up ALL my stuff thinking that I’d go in, say hi, take some pictures, get out, go back, grab my coveted corner, finish my work, bada bing!, bada bang!, bada boom!, I’m done. I even left my tea cup with the counter guy to say I’ll be coming back in a few and to please hold it for me. Needless to say that wasn’t how things went down. But s’all good! After chatting it up with him, I discovered that he’s a super duper swell guy, not to mention that his work is dope! So I HIGHLY recommend you make it out to the show to check out his art and say hello. While he worked we talked about Vancouver (where he lives now), Toronto (where he’s from), his wife, the expecting of their first baby, traveling and him moving to the sunshine coast. But because I went with no intentions for conducting an interview and because my mind is like a giant sieve that retains .005% of all information that penetrates my eardrums, I will do you the favor of NOT recounting our conversation since I know me and the quality of my operations. It’ll be the ol’ classic chinese telephone phenomenon where I end up reporting a story about the time he sold his house, took his family down to honduras to try and create his own personal utopia, builds an ice factory but ends up running into some serious obstacles, alienating all around him and polluting a... Oh wait, that was a movie wasn’t it? See what I mean?

Yes I know generally top 10s are relegated to something DJs do but I’m tired of nerding out on music alone so I’m just going to shout it out to the universe and let it drift where it may. Warning: these playlists are dance heavy but it’s what I’ve been obsessed with these days. If I were going to describe the stuff I’ve been getting into, I would definitely say it’s electronic based, heavy on the nu rave with some inclination towards minimal techno with trancey elements. I’m also digging the disco-y stuff and electro house stuff. ‘Cept that I’m wondering if maybe Italo Disco has reached it’s peak and is on it’s way out. I finally settled on blogspot considering this seems like the most legitimate blog site out there. Who knows though, since in truth I don't browse other blogs unless I've been directed to a person's page from alternate links.

Truthfully, I'm not really sure what is going to change. I write when the mood strikes and don't have any solid plans for how much time I'm going to put into this thing. I'm not looking to become a fulltime blogger nor am I trying to create a name for myself through blogging. The simple fact is I'm more interested in forcing myself into a habit that's going to nurture my writing and photography skills. I'm not even sure about how I'm going to fit time into writing for this. As it is, with freelance work, personal art projects, interning for fecal face, and the maintenance of a somewhat demanding social life, I have little time for anything else. But I am motivated so we'll see how it goes. For now, this will be used as an artistic playground. So that's that. Not much more to say about it.

The next few days I'll be posting a photoblog on the Spring Capsule Design Festival that took place in Hayes Valley this memorial day weekend. Stay tuned for more!
